What is a Master of Wine (MW)?
A Master of Wine (MW) is someone who has demonstrated, by way of rigorous examination, a thorough understanding of all aspects of wine and an ability to communicate clearly.
Masters of Wine have completed the three stages of the MW programme and signed a Code of Conduct as part of the professional integrity accorded to the title. The Stage 1 Assessment is preliminary to the Stage 2 MW exams: which include 5 Theory exams and 3 Practical blind-tasting exams. The final stage constitutes a research paper on a topic approved by the Institute.
There are currently 382 Masters of Wine, living in 30 different countries across five continents (452 people have passed the MW examination since 1953). A Master of Wine will actively encourage others in the pursuit of knowledge as well as seek to bring wine communities together.
Both founders of Dragon Phoenix, Fongyee Walker and Edward Ragg are Masters of Wine. Then our senior educator Gus Zhu also acquired the title in 2019. This makes Dragon Phoenix the only educational provider in mainland China with three MWs teaching at the moment!
What is the WSET?
The WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) is a professional institute based in London, UK. It is the leading global provider of wines and spirits education. All WSET awards are globally-recognized international qualifications. To learn more about the WSET, click here.
Is the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines included in the DP Foundation Course? What is the difference between the two courses?
The WSET Level 1 Award in Wines is not included in the DP Foundation Wine Course. It is a useful qualification, but our Foundation Course is developed by DP’s education team to suit our Chinese students and the dynamics of the Chinese market. The course is designed to give beginners a kick-start in wine, to help them gain experience in wine tasting, purchasing and storing wine in our market and with reference to global styles of wine. Students will receive a Dragon Phoenix Foundation Wine Certificate as a proof of successful completion of the course. Dragon Phoenix currently does not run the WSET Level 1 Award in Wines class, which can easily be taken with other WSET providers in China.
How do I apply for a re-sit if I fail my WSET exam? And how much does this cost?
Once WSET exam results are released, students who have failed may contact DP’s class coordinators to discuss the upcoming exam schedule. Due to the limited exam seats and high demand, please contact us as soon as possible to arrange a time to re-sit your exam.
Re-sit costs: the WSET Level 2 Award in Wines exam costs 800 RMB for each student to re-sit. The WSET Level 3 Award in Wines exam costs 1330 RMB for each student. This includes two units: the blind tasting exam which costs 450 RMB and the theory exam which costs 880 RMB. If the student fails just one part of the WSET Level 3 exam, he/she needs to pay the relevant part being re-sat only.
